About PIDE

Established in 1957, the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has built a distinguished legacy as Pakistan’s leading institution for economic research, policy analysis, and advanced education. From its earliest years, PIDE has played a pivotal role in shaping national development thinking by providing rigorous, evidence-based analysis on Pakistan’s most pressing economic and social challenges. The Institute has been home to some of the country’s most influential economists and scholars, whose work helped define standards of analytical rigor, intellectual independence, and policy relevance in public discourse.

Beyond research, PIDE’s legacy is deeply rooted in human capital development. Through its postgraduate and doctoral programs, the Institute has trained and mentored generations of economists, policymakers, and development practitioners who have gone on to serve in key positions across government, academia, and international organizations. PIDE has consistently promoted an interdisciplinary and globally engaged approach to economic inquiry, fostering dialogue between theory and practice and between national priorities and global knowledge frontiers.

Over more than seven decades, PIDE has demonstrated remarkable institutional resilience and adaptability, responding to evolving development challenges while maintaining its core commitment to academic excellence and policy impact. Today, its legacy is reflected not only in its scholarly contributions and influence on national planning, but also in its continued relevance as a trusted platform for informed debate, innovative policy solutions, and evidence-based decision-making at both national and international levels.
